On September 24, 2025, Prof. Jun Li from Tongji University presented the second Expert CERE Seminar titled:
“Chinese TVET: Historical Development, Status Quo and Challenges.”
Features of Development Trends in TVET in China: How Was the Second Expert CERE Seminar
The key findings of the recent developmental trends of TVET in China included, among other things, the following: encouraging stronger industrial involvement in TVET; providing subsidies for companies that offer training; and supporting inter-regional development.

If one of the challenges facing Chinese TVET is its relatively low social status despite its increasing political significance, then the opportunities lie in developing the industry and changing the labour market landscape.

In conclusion, experts in education engaged in a lively discussion that highlighted several crucial aspects, such as teacher requirements, permeability between TVET and higher education, and possibilities for international cooperation.

This seminar furthered CERE’s mission to raise awareness of and visibility for education systems around the world. Stay tuned for the upcoming CERE seminar in November, which will research the specifics of Indian TVET.

The second Expert CERE Seminar focused on surveying Chinese TVET, its transformation, and recent trends, as well as the difficulties it faces. The session opened with a presentation by Jun Li, Director of the Institute of Educational Economy and Management at Tongji University.

Prof. Li provided an overview of the Chinese TVET system and presented relevant national data. Notably, there are two TVET systems: one for initial vocational education and one for adult training, comprising over 8,000 institutions and 30 million students in total.

Against the backdrop of the socioeconomic development of Chinese society over the past four decades, the development of TVET since the late 1970s was also explored.
